The Roots of Rebellion: ROR_Tim_Barry1

Here is a man who probably is in one of the most influencial punk bands of the 90's: This band is Avail, from Richmond, Virginia. I saw them the first time in 96, my friends Chris, Keith, and I drove down to Rhode Island and Boston to see them. Avail at the time was touring with Citizen Fish and The Young Pioneers. We all stayed at a commune in Worcester, called The Collective-Ago-go, and played soccer in the morning.

Avail, simply put, were one of those bands, that had the talent for uniting people together. Watching them play live, it was the first time i saw punk kids hang out with hardcore kids and really get along. It wasn't just a show, but a celebration.

Strip it down, and you'll find Tim Barry, who now plays traditional americana music with family and friends. It is music with ethics. It is music about hopping trains, love loss, loneliness intertwined with the strong desire for freedom.

When I saw them in Montreal, they played two shows in one night. The last show, at Escogriff... they laid it down to a small but attentive crowd... It started it up with Josh Small, who played banjo and steel guitar... Then Tim played and shared his set with, The Waddin Girl, who is Tim's piano and bass player's other band. It was just friends playing together, for nothing else but the love of good music and i guess free beer. At the end of the night, and drunk, I told Tim, that in 10 years, i wish for him to have walked the same road that Steve Earle has done... Please support him and the label that is currently putting out his albums - Suburban Home Records

So without further a do... Here is Tim Barry laying it down verbally and playing some songs to back it up. Whether you are into music, psychology, or just plain fucking good people... Listen in to what is said... Let it continue to inspire you to do, what it is you need to be doing.

All this to the music of: Tim Barry, Steve Earle, Propagandhi, Woodie Guthrie, and Jimmi Rodgers (Length Time: 1h06)

Websites:

www.myspace.com/timbarryrva

The Roots of Rebellion: ROR_Strikeanywhere 3

On the eve of the Strike Anywhere, Bouncing Souls, The Loved One, and Static Radio NJ Canadian tour, we invited Thomas Barnett, singer for Strike Anywhere, to take over The Roots. If you are not familiar with Strike Anywhere, I will put a firm wager that they will be recognized as one of the greatest american punk hardcore band to have ever existed. Let's just say they are walking with the giants of the past and present.

So this is where the show becomes extremely simple. Give the mic to Thomas. Let him talk. Let him DJ, play some songs that inspire him and his band-mates. Our conversation between songs turned naturally to the punk/hardcore community and how it is a complex counter culture, that is sometimes irrational, yet vital to those who have been blessed with its power and beauty.

Poetry with a fucking punch mixed to rebel music. This is Thomas Barnett of Strike Anywhere on the Roots.

42:00 minutes:

All this to the music of : Embrace, Cro-Mags, Avail, Angelic Upstarts, Bouncing Souls, and the Bad fucking Brains (Length Time 42:00 Minutes).

For more interviews with Thomas Barnett, (Click Here)

The Roots of Rebellion: ROR 01/19/2007 Part 1

PART 1 OF 2:

The third show of the new year and it is packed.

We started it off talking to Chris Quinnell, and Alex Robot: The Station Manager and Program director of CJLO. We talked to them about "marching towards AM!" and the work involved in running a soon to be AM radio station in Montreal. These two executives are the paid backbone of the station, therefore Montrealers will find their talk important in learning who will be running this community oriented station.

We then interviewed Mitch Altman, the inventor of TV be Gone. After this interview, Jonah turned to me and said, this guy's talk blew my brain and I agreed. Listen to a tech geek taking his life back by rediscovering his freedom in creating a batman gizmo that turns off any TV. A real rebel in our eyes and a great addition to our investigation of rebellion at its roots.

We then interviewed Nia Capps #74, Boxcar Betty of Les Contrabanditas, and Deluxegourmetbeats from the new team "Les Filles de Roi". For the first time but the not the last, All Girls, Montreal Roller Derby makes its presence to The Roots of Rebellion. They tell us where they are with their league, what is roller derby, and what they are doing with it. We then tried to get Alex Robot to help the league with a sponsorship, but got a politician's answer. We will continue to have the girls on, because we just think it is rad having girls in Montreal who enjoy beating each other up on rollerskates.

Take your life back was the basis of the show. All this to killer music of which i can't name because our playlist didn't save properly. Enjoy the show.

PART 1 OF 2:

Here it is the second show of the new year. On this show, Sal, t-bo, and Jonah pay their respect to Robert Anton Wilson, who passed away the day before at 4:50AM. We play an excerpt from the Maybe Logic Documentary on Quantum Mechanics and the experience of reality. Tom Waits song that started the show 'Along the Road to Peace' was also, in its own way, a tribute to old Bob. He will be greatly missed and will surely continue to inspire people for years to come.

After talking about the news, Andrew introduces Jason Scott, who did an 8 part documentary focusing on Bulletin Board Services (BBS). Before the internet, there were BBSes. These BBSes allowed virtual space to exist for different groups of people to form groups and allegiances.

T-bo then caught up with Jon and Chad of Drag the River, as they tackle bad weather through the Colorado rockies to play fine country music. This one is short and sweet in order to discover one of the best kept musical secret.

This is it baby, the talk radio show from Montreal that explores rebellion at its root... Our second episode of 2007: From Country music to Cosmic Comedian. Your hosts Sal Riley, Jonah, and t-bo spin it all. Beware of imitations.

All of this to the music of: Tom Waits, Descendents, Cobra AC's, The Rutts, Buju Banton, Donavon Frankenreiter, Drag the River, and Black Rice.
